Ever since the industrial revolution in the 18th century, air pollution has been a problem, especially in urban areas. Over the last 30 years, the EU and national governments have undertaken actions and introduced legislation to tackle air pollution. The primary aim has been to protect health but also to protect the environment, cultural heritage and crops. However, at the same time there has been a big increase in car traffic and energy consumption. So although legislation on air pollution has improved and more actions have been taken, air pollution today still poses significant health risks. This is especially so for people with asthma, allergy and COPD patients for whom the health effects due to air pollution can be devastating and can lead to a reduced quality of life.
